A Complete Financial Roadmap for the UK Student Visa (2026 Rules)

Satisfying the financial criteria is one of the most critical elements of a successful UK Student Visa application. If your financial documents are not 100% accurate, your application risks an immediate rejection. Here is a simplified breakdown of the new rules.

1. Updated UKVI Maintenance Rates

To reflect the rising cost of living, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has updated the monthly maintenance (living expense) requirements for the 2026/2027 academic year.

You must prove you have held the following amounts in your bank account for up to a maximum of 9 months:

  • Inside London (Inner London): £1,529 per month (Total 9-month requirement: £13,761)
  • Outside London / Rest of UK: £1,171 per month (Total 9-month requirement: £10,539)

    • 2. The 28-Day Bank Statement Rule

    The total visa maintenance fund must be held continuously in your bank account for a minimum of 28 consecutive days.

  • No Drop-Offs: Your balance must not drop below the required amount even for a single day.
  • Expiration: The bank statement or certificate you submit must be dated within 31 days of the date you submit your online visa application.

    • 3. Acceptable Sources of Funds & Sponsorship

  • Personal Accounts: The account must be in your name, or your parent's/legal guardian's name.
  • Parental Consent: If using a parent's bank statement, you must submit a signed letter of consent and your original birth certificate.
  • Unacceptable Sponsors: Bank statements from uncles, aunts, cousins, or family friends are not accepted by the UKVI.
  • Asset Types: Funds must be in liquid cash (savings or current account). Shares, gold, property deeds, or fixed deposits that cannot be liquidated instantly are not accepted.
