Financial Proof Comparison: Canada vs Germany

For international students, demonstrating financial capability is a strict visa requirement. Canada and Germany use two distinct escrow-like systems: the Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) and the Blocked Account (Sperrkonto). Here is how they compare.

1. Total Upfront Capital Required

The initial deposit requirements are set by the respective governments to cover one full year of living expenses.

  • Canada (GIC): C$20,635 (updated for 2026).
  • Germany (Blocked Account): €11,904 (equivalent to roughly C$17,500 / $12,900 USD).
  • Verdict: Germany is more affordable upfront by around C$3,000.
  • 2. Monthly Payout Structure

Once you arrive in the country, the funds are released to you in installments.

  • Canada (GIC): Upon arrival, you receive an initial payout of C$4,127 (20% of GIC) to cover settling-in costs, followed by 12 monthly payments of roughly C$1,375.
  • Germany (Blocked Account): You receive a fixed €992 per month for 12 months. There is no large initial lump sum payout.
  • 3. Interest Rates & Admin Fees

  • Canada: Major banks (CIBC, Scotiabank, Simplii) charge a setup fee of C$150 to C$200, but offer 3.5% to 5.0% interest, which can earn you C$400+ back.
  • Germany: Providers (Expatrio, Coracle, Fintiba) charge a setup fee of €49 to €89 and a monthly maintenance fee of €5, offering negligible interest rates.
  • Summary

If you have lower upfront savings, Germany's Blocked Account is easier to fund. However, Canada's GIC payout schedule gives you a helpful initial cushion when renting your first room.
