Germany Student Visa Cost & Blocked Account Requirements (2026)
Germany Blocked Account and Visa Costs Explained
Germany is famous for having no tuition fees at public universities, but that doesn't mean it's completely free. The German government requires proof of financial resources to ensure you can support yourself.
1. The Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)
To obtain a German student visa, you must set up a Blocked Account and deposit €11,904 (for 1 year/12 months). This allows you to withdraw €992 per month for living costs.
2. Visa Fees
3. Semester Contribution (Semesterbeitrag)
Even though public universities do not charge tuition, you must pay a semester contribution twice a year. This ranges from €150 to €350 per semester and usually covers administrative costs and a semester transit ticket (Semesterticket) for free local public transport.
4. Health Insurance
Statutory health insurance (like TK or AOK) is mandatory for students under 30. It costs around €110 - €125 per month and provides complete medical coverage.
