When planning to study abroad, most students only calculate the cost of tuition fees and rent. However, several "hidden" costs can catch you off-guard. Here is what you need to budget for.

1. Semester Contributions (Germany)

While public German universities have no tuition fees, you must pay a Semester Contribution (€150 to €350) twice a year. This covers administrative fees, student union dues, and local transit.

2. Winter Clothing

If you are moving from a warm climate to Canada or Germany, do not underestimate the winter. High-quality winter coats, thermal layers, and insulated snow boots can easily cost C$300 to C$600 ($200 to $450 USD).
